Health and Hair Care Advice from BikiniBOD Brand Ambassador: MyStylist_My

Welcome to My’s World.

Just your average clean eating cosmetologist with a highly coveted 5 star Yelp rating and over 300 reviews. Her Instagram (MyStylist_My) is filled with balayage and ombré colors you’ve probably repinned on Pinterest or brought in to show your hair stylist, oh and My has a three month waiting list just to have her touch your hair.

Don’t let the pretty face and hair flip fool you though, she can still kick your butt at the gym. My-Phuong Pham is one of BikiniBOD’s superstar Brand Ambassadors who exemplifies the characteristics of body meets beauty. Although she prefers to keep her face behind the chair and let your hair show the work, My was kind enough to allow our team to place the spotlight on her in our first exclusive Brand Ambassador blog feature.

How long have you been in the industry and tell us what inspired you to become a hair stylist?

I have been in the industry for seven years. It has always been my passion to create beautiful hair, makeup and to make people feel beautiful. It is very inspirational to see hair make people become more confident in themselves.

Since the first day of summer is approaching, and because Balayage and Ombré hair styles are your area of expertise, what advice can you give the BikiniBOD babes to help protect our lighter strands from sun damage?

There are many things that you can do to protect your hair from the UV rays of the sun. Color fades when in constant direct sunlight, there is no escaping that. These tips will help protect it from the elements:

  1. First make sure you hair is conditioned and moisturized when being exposed to the sun. You should deep condition your hair at least once a week to keep the color looking fresh, shiny, and strong.
  2. Making sure you are using the right products is important as well; your products should be sulfate free and safe for color treated hair. Using regular masks will help too! Do a mask every time you wash your hair and only apply small amounts each time (the size of a dime).
  3. Remembering that "dirty" hair is actually good for coloring hair. Keeping your hair healthy is also important as you ombré it. At the 8 week mark come back to the salon and have a trim and apply toner, you won’t split ends and will have fresh color in about an hour.
  4. Try not to wash your hair before coloring it. The natural oils produced by your scalp can help protect it from damage.

What tips can you share with the BikiniBOD babes that will help them achieve the perfect beachy waves for summer?

Everyone’s hair is different. I would say use the right product for your hair type and learn how to do loose curls. Once you get the curl right, all you need to do is add some product to give it texture ... Sea salt spray is number one for beachhead wavy hair!

As one of the top reviewed colorists in the Bay area, as well as achieving a highly coveted 5 star Yelp rating, you are an exceptionally in demand hair stylist. How do you ensure you're staying healthy with such a hectic schedule?

An organized and well planned schedule is what you will need to start doing, although it becomes super stressful and busy at times. I like to take 10-15 minutes after each client to keep myself hydrated and have a small healthy snack before continuing on. I have meal preps planned each day for lunch while standing all day (14+ hours) and blow drying hair is pretty good workout.

What is your philosophy on dieting and eating right?

I plan out my meals for the week and create them all on Sunday. I make sure I am eating right, this makes me feel healthier. I believe in staying active, working hard and exercising.

How does a healthy diet affect your hair?

For me, eating healthy and getting the right proteins will not only create lush, beautiful hair but also helps it grow more. Your hair is made of proteins, so eating more proteins and essential vitamins will enhance the growth and fullness of your hair.

As you know BikiniBOD is all about a healthy lifestyle, therefore taking things in moderation can be key. What is your favorite healthy food? What is your favorite cheat food?

I love to snack on fruits and nuts throughout the day: strawberries, cherries, cashews and pistachios. Yum! My cheat food, hands down Cajun spiced craw fish!! And buttered up corn, make sure you throw in some clams, oysters and shrimp!

Tell us how you keep yourself motivated to maintain your BikiniBOD?

Exercise, it gives me a boost in stamina to make it through my day. I wake up early to work out and it makes me feel better about myself, it gives me a boost of confidence. I'd like to say I do it for myself, but I also like to motivate others to do the same around me and its working!

Nice! To motivate others around you what three tips would you give a woman working towards a healthy and fit BikiniBOD like yours?

  1. Just do it! Don’t lag or push off a workout session until next week because that becomes a bad habit. Even if it’s only 15-30 minutes, make sure you stay active throughout the week.
  2. Eat right! Do your research, everyone is different and sometimes buying a meal prep plan for the week helps if you don't like to make it yourself. Remember to stick to it and don't cheat. Your cheat day will feel that much more special.
  3. Sleep. Make sure you’re getting the right amount of rest; your body will thank you.

Last but not least, describe how taking BikiniBOD has affected your workouts, body, and beauty routine?

Ever since I started taking BikiniBOD it has helped me control my appetite. I've notice my nails and hair are healthier. Overall [BikiniBOD] makes me feel much better. I feel healthier, happier and most importantly I have the energy to make it through some of the most intense and stressful work days.
