3 Skin Saviors You Need to be Drinking

Your eccentric aunt who was always drinking unique teas and cleansing the air with sage might also be one of your healthiest relatives. When taken with a balanced diet, herbal tea can have a very positive impact on one’s immune system, help normalize the blood pressure, prevent various heart diseases, and flush out the intestinal tract. The woman may have given you homeopathic crystals for your ninth birthday, but ask her how her latest cancer screening went, and we’re willing to bet it was all clear. This could be, in part, because these teas are loaded with anti-carcinogenic properties that can effectively prevent cancer cells from forming while slowing down the growth of already established cancer cells.

You might’ve noticed a few interesting ingredients in this aunt’s pantry, but her clear, glowing skin and vibrant energy were no accident, and she was probably enjoying a concoction of the following ingredients almost every day.

Rooibos tea, green tea, and apple cider vinegar are all excellent methods of detoxing the body, the efforts of which will show up almost immediately on the skin. Getting rid of all the extra gunk allows your system to function properly, and the disappearance of unwanted blemishes and inflammation lets you know that the detox process is working.

How does each of these earthy ingredients benefit your skin? Ask your aunt, or avoid the hour-long chat about why you didn’t make it to Burning Man this year and read our tips instead.

Drink Rooibos Tea for Better Digestion and Proper Vitamin Absorption

Drinking rooibos tea helps stimulate the secretion of enzymes to aid in better digestion. By improving blood circulation, the tea’s vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants can be delivered throughout the body at a faster rate, allowing for proper absorption.

An increased blood flow to the kidneys means waste can be expelled much quicker, which gives it less time to cause issues that could lead to blemishes. With your system getting all kinds of revved up, you’ll notice a radiance that your skin did not previously have, and the increase in blood flow could leave you going blush free! Could Rooibos Rosy Glow be the color of the year for 2016? We’re just sayin’.

Green Tea Will Rid the Body of Damaging Free Radicals

As a drink, green tea can be an incredibly light, refreshing pick-me-up halfway through the day. As a skin treatment, it’s almost better: A very rich source of the powerful antioxidant Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), green tea enables your body to rid itself of free radicals, which can damage or even kill healthy cells. Aside from the dangerous internal effects, these attacks wreak havoc on skin, causing imbalances that can lead to pesky breakouts and uncharacteristic issues that are even tougher to get rid of than your usual stubborn pimple.

Detoxification via green tea will help neutralize the effects of free radicals, which in turn will keep you healthier inside and out. Use it in smoothies, enjoy it after a workout, and give it a try as a replacement for your 3 p.m. latte. A little green goes a long, long way.

Use Apple Cider Vinegar to Balance Your pH Level

Say hello to your favorite new beauty tool. Apple cider vinegar’s resume boasts skills as a digestible detox agent, a topical treatment, and an overall purifier. Most people are a little uneasy about ingesting ACV straight-up, but its milder flavor makes it reasonably palatable, and with benefits such as weight loss, appetite suppression, and fat accumulation prevention, we think the three seconds of “ick” are well worth it.

As it cleans you out internally, you can also apply it directly to the skin with a simple cotton ball. A ratio of one part apple cider vinegar to two parts water creates an all-natural homemade toner that can shrink pores, fade scars, even out skin tone, and cause you to completely forget what a zit even is. ACV regulates the pH balance of the skin and is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory to keep everything clearer, brighter, and even more gorgeous.

Aunt Earthy didn’t clog her skin or her aura with crazy chemicals or dyes, so while her advice that brushing your hair was an entirely optional social construct made up by The Man may have been a tad extreme, her health and beauty practices (however unintentional) were pretty spot-on.

Rooibos tea, green tea, and apple cider vinegar all purify the body from the inside out, eliminating unnecessary stuff out of your system, which will inevitably lead to a blemish-free glow. Whether you can only stomach a cup of tea a day, or are going at this detox thing head-on with a tablespoon of ACV in your tea and on your face, you’re bound to feel more at one with yourself and your morning skin routine. Peace, man.
