We’ve all seen our friends post on Facebook about their latest trip to the gym or dieting trick, but what if someone told you social media could be a great tool to support your weight loss journey and encourage you to stay on track? According to nutritionists and fitness experts, it can do just that.

Research shows that dieters who have a support group throughout their weight-loss journey have an easier time sticking to their diets than those who go it alone. Many find success by relying on friends and family, but social media can offer a support community that’s even more powerful.

Think about the following tips for helping you use social media to your advantage as you seek a healthier lifestyle.

1. Join an online support group.

Social media is a great arena in which support groups can congregate. Chat rooms, forums, and group messaging via social media are excellent ways to reach out to others without having to face a room of strangers.

It allows you to remain anonymous while getting the encouragement you need from those who understand what you’re going through. And the best part? Any support group or meeting you attend over social media is usually free of charge!

2. Keep a social accountability journal.

Maintaining a personal weight-loss journal is an invaluable tool for sticking with your diet. Write down the foods you eat, how much you exercise, and your weight loss progress on a daily basis.

These will help you to see your progress and learn from your failures. Avoid posting every single day about your weight-loss progress; bloating your friends’ newsfeeds with your food journal probably won’t help you find supporters. Nobody wants to be that Facebook friend!

But typing the occasional post or creating a vlog or blog about your progress could be key to helping you stay on track.

Also, look for registered dieticians or personal trainers in your area and like their pages on Facebook or follow them on Twitter. You can gather meaningful insights and ask questions about your specific diet to help you achieve your goals.

4. Solicit help.

Any time you’re struggling with your diet, feel free to tweet a cry for help from your friends and family. They can boost your confidence and keep you accountable for what you eat and how often you exercise.

Furthermore, every social media platform is a wealth of information for dieters if you know where and how to look. As mentioned above, you can follow fitness gurus to get their insights as well as articles and information about your particular diet. Share this information online to attract insights and tips from others.

There are also several weight-loss forums you can join that are devoted to building communities where users can ask questions and receive helpful information to facilitate healthy diet and exercise.

5. Post your progress.

Make it a goal to post something online every week about how far you’ve. You’ll be able to track your accomplishments and receive confidence-boosting comments and likes from your supporters.

You can also use interactive weight-management websites that help you keep track of your weight, calories burned, food eaten, and exercise performed, and these websites are always connected to social media. Pinterest is a dieter’s heaven. Though you can find a wealth of recipes to fatten you up, you can also train your Pinterest newsfeed to show you the healthy pins only.

By constantly searching for and pinning light recipes and workout tips, this website will guide you to eat healthy without sacrificing good taste.

You can also create your own personal health boards. Devote one to healthy recipes, one to workout and exercise tips, and one to motivational quotes to help you stick to your diet.

Furthermore, fitness gurus on Pinterest will give you more insights on how to maintain your diet. For example, Jillian Michaels has her own Pinterest page which offers inspirations, dieting tips, recipes, and more to help her followers gain further healthy insights.

7. Read and share inspiring articles.

The key to sticking with a healthy diet and exercise regime boils down to your motivation and willpower. In order to increase your mental capacity for dieting, take some time each day to read and share inspiring articles and videos.

Begin by looking for content about staying motivated, holding on to motivation when the cravings are strong, seeking a better body image, diet and fitness tips from magazines, cute workout clothing, the latest bikini fads; just read whatever you’re interested in and whatever it takes to gain motivation again, and then share your insights with your friends.

You’ll learn a lot both from teaching others and from hearing their comments.

8. Engage in friendly competition.

Nothing can motivate you to stick to your diet quite like a little friendly competition! Invite several of your friends to join in on a diet and fitness challenge, and offer a prize for the winner.

For example, create a challenge with goals like eating fruits and vegetables every day, avoiding sugar six days a week, recording what you eat every day, and exercising at least 30 minutes for five days a week. Instead of using social media as a time waster, use it as an enabler, to help you lose weight and become the person you want to be. You’ll be amazed how quickly your body image and motivation will change when you have the support of an entire social community hoping to reach the same goals as you.
