What it Really Takes to Be a Mom (From a Daughter's Perspective)

Being a Mom is one of the hardest and most rewarding jobs on the planet (or so it seems). As women, we have the ability within our lives (if we so choose) to go from being a daughter to being a mother. While we each have different childhood stories and experiences, it is safe to say that, as daughters, we naturally look to our mothers and, as a result, receive built-in life lessons that accompany us for the rest of our lives. Here are 5 sappy, beautiful quotes that sum up a few of these lessons.

1. “Being a mother is an attitude, not a biological relation.” -Robert Heinlein

This is something we don't usually think about unless we have other "mothers" in our lives who did not physically birth us. While there is an undeniable connection between a biological mother and baby, the rest of the relationship takes effort from both parties. Being a mother is something that a woman has to welcome and embrace in order to act in a truly maternal manner. If you are lucky enough to have a  biological mom who fully embraces her role as a mother, that is something to be grateful for.

2. “I tell my kids, ‘I am thinking about you every other minute of my day.’" -Michelle Obama

As a daughter, it is a gift to have a mother who thinks of you and considers you. Often times, we forget to tell people that we are thinking of them, even if we constantly are. Take the time to send a quick text, pick up the phone, or share stories over coffee (or Beauty Sleep Tea). It will make someone's day and strengthen a relationship. As time goes on, be grateful if the moms in your life express interest in your daily activities, emotions, and overall well-being.

3. “My parents elected me president of the family when I was 4. We actually had an election every year and I always won. I’m an only child, and I could count on my mother’s vote.” -Condeleezza Rice

A mother's support is one of the most crucial components of a childhood. It shapes who we are and who we become. Without this support, a child will most likely lack confidence, strength, and other important qualities that this support provides. It is special to have a mom who you know is your #1 fan.

4. “Mama was my greatest teacher, a teacher of compassion, love and fearlessness. If love is sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet flower of love.” -Stevie Wonder

Some of life's best lessons are learned through observation of others. While no parent is perfect, if your mother has taught you core life lessons that help to make you a better person, she has done her job.

5. “It’s not easy being a mother. If it were easy, fathers would do it.” -Dorothy on The Golden Girls

Once a mother, always a mother. It is a full-time, 24/7 job that is tiresome. Appreciate your mom this Mother's Day (and every other day of the year) for simply being your mom. No matter what the circumstances are, there is at least one aspect about your mom that you can be grateful for, as is true for all relationships and life lessons.
